Updating a very old version

About a week ago, Thunderbird started giving me messages about an invalid security certificate for start.thunderbird.net. I've installed it here on two x PC's (both running Windows 7) but the message only appeared on one system. By pressing the Help' menu item I realised that the 'good' system is running ver 78 but the one giving me the messages is back at around ver 24. I've pressed the option to update but it says that no updates are available (probably too far out-of-date...)

If I uninstall Thunderbird and install the latest version, will I lose all my emails or should the new version find them okay?

Many thanks Stans but if I'm reading that thread correctly it refers to using 'Help' and then 'Update' to do repeated updates. In my case 'Help->Update' tells me that no updates are available. So I'm assuming I'd need to uninstall and then re-install.

It seems you glazed over the thread too fast. Take your time, the link to the archive of all Thunderbird releases was provided there.

Ah sorry, I get it now. So (just to check..) if I update in small stages, should I leave each existing copy installed before running the next installer? i.e. I won't need to uninstall?

more options

The installer for the next version should automatically detect and upgrade/replace the existing older copy, so you don't have to uninstall in between the versions, but you can do so if you want to be thorough. Each version should be installing in the same installation location, thus effectively replacing the existing copy, UNLESS you deliberately choose to install in different locations.

Thanks again Stans. It looked like the first version I need to install is 45.8.0. So I just installed it and everything seems to have worked fine.

Admittedly I still have a few more updates to perform but interestingly, that original warning message is still showing each time I launch Thunderbird. I've attached a screenshot so you can see what I'm seeing here.

(BTW - clicking the link to Add an Exception doesn't do anything at all...)

Tbird 45 is still far outdated. We're on v91 now. If you don't wanna jump to v91 just yet, at least bring it up to v78 with a plan to move up sooner or later. Your v78 will automatically upgrade to v91 when blocking bugs have been fixed. No one that I know of here is offering support or would be bothered to support the grossly outdated versions of Thunderbird.

I just updated to the next stage (52.9.1) and the error message has gone now. So I'll leave it like this for a day or two and then carry out the remaining upgrades.

One minor problem I've having with the newer upgrades is carriage returns. Every carriage return gives me a double-line spacing instead of single-line. Is this maybe a problem with the font (Trebuchet MS) or is there a setting somewhere that I can change?

There is a setting for that behaviour. Go to Preferences > Composition > HTML Style. Uncheck the checkbox labelled Use paragraph format instead of Body Text by default.
