Since the upgrade, the scroll bar has been working differently in folders and subfolders. The list of emails/subject lines doesn't drop with the scroll bar. (See photo) It used to be that if the list looked like this (photo), there were really only about 12-15 messages in that folder. [There are actually thousands above.] If there were more, the list would be all the way to the bottom of the bar. NOW, you have to scroll up to see the previous messages. May seem like a small matter, but it's really irritating. Is it something that I can fix? Is it a bug? Is it a "feature"? (If so, I hate it.) TIA for any help you might lend.

Do the scrollbars look correct in safe mode (hold Option when launching TB)? If they do, launch again in safe mode, 'Reset toolbars & controls', 'Make changes & restart'.

No, same problem. Shows only last few emails/subjects, until I run the scroll bar up and down.

I don't have a Mac to test, but if I did, and safe mode didn't change anything, I'd try a new profile. Help/Troubleshooting, about:profiles, create a new profile, add an account, and see if the display is different. If it looks correct, data can be transferred from the old profile to the new. Either profile can be launched from about:profiles.

Thanks for your help, sfhowes. A question: In creating a new profile and adding a new account, does that mean that I have to transfer all my email files to get this to work? because I have literally HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of email messages in 50 or more folders and subfolders. // If enough people ask about this, is it something that Thunderbird would try to fix? (I haven't had any issues like this for a long time.)

You don't have to transfer anything unless the new profile works. If it doesn't work, it might be worth submitting a bug report to Bugzilla, especially if other Mac users confirm it. The old profile is unaffected during this test, and can be launched when needed.

To test with a folder from the old profile, copy an mbox file, a large file with no extension, named after a folder, from the old profile to the Mail/Local Folders location in the new profile, with TB closed. To open the profile folder, Help/Troubleshooting, Profile Folder, Show in Finder. The mbox files are in subfolders of Mail (POP accounts), ImapMail (IMAP accounts) or Mail/Local Folders (local mail).

Thanks. I think I'm going to have to wait and see if other Mac folks confirm. Complain. I'm not going to go to what seems like a huge amount of work (and the possibility of loss and disorganization) to make that scroll thing work for me. Does that make sense? I mean, it's crazy-irritating, but not terminal. :-) It seems that it should be almost as easy as the flip of a switch in developer terms. A mere oversight. I'll cross my fingers. And I thank you again for your help.
