How do I stop thunderbird from adding extra spaces and re-formatting my emails?

68.2.2 When I'm typing a message and hit enter, thunderbird changes from "body text" to "paragraph" formatting and adds extra spaces. How do I shut this off? It's annoying as hell and making my email composition and formatting rough. I prefer the old way. All instructions I can find refer to menu options not present in the current version.

Do I need to find an old version on thunderbird to use?

Tools/Options/Composition/General, uncheck 'Use Paragraph format...'. Press Alt if the Menu Bar with Tools is hidden.

As a side note, generally not advisable, because then you are stranded on a version that doesn't get updates. Plus, when a function changes there is also often a deliberate effort made to provide you with an alternative to getting the old functionality, as Steve has just described in this case.

To that point, ctrl+enter was added to offer the old behavior.

Thanks. I'm not sure why, but that option works now. Yesterday, it kept kicking back to "paragraph text" when I'd hit enter in the composition window.
