Thunderbird is only a mail-CLIENT. Login on to your mail-server using webmail or another client should work fine if some settings are observed
If you set up your server to use POP3 and your client to keep mails on server. Then all mails you download is still on server until you delete.
If it's set up as IMAP then mails stay on server and you just peek into the folders. If you delete or move a mail outside server-folders then they will be removed from server.
