When fetching emails, TB says connected to server, but doesn't download any emails

Suddenly the following started happening. (Things have been working fine for many months on the same account settings).

When I try to fetch emails from my IMAP email server, there is a message at the bottom that says Thunderbird is connected to the server, but nothing happens thereafter - no emails are downloaded. Thunderbird doesn't even prompt me for a password to login to the IMAP server like it usually does.

However, note that I *can* send emails without a problem (via the configured SMTP server). Plus, I have no problems fetching emails from the same server on other emails clients with the same account settings.

The problem started after I upgraded to Thunderbird 38.2.0, from some earlier version from a few months back). Thunderbird prompted me to do the upgrade, and it may have kicked off whilst it was still connecting and authenticating against the IMAP server - that's just speculating.

Any ideas what I can do?

Platform details: Thunderbird 38.2.0, Windows 7 x64, IMAP incoming over SSL, SMTP outgoing over SSL

Thanks in advance

Glen

Thunderbird 38 is indeed fussier than previous versions.. see my blog posting. There are a couple of things you can do. Ranging from Fix the broken security on the server to a temporary add-on that will get it going if the server fix is delayed.

press Ctrl+Shift+J to open the error console. Press the clear button and then attempt to get your mail

What error message appears? if any

Ah ... Thanks Matt.

I had just worked out how to view the TB Error Console from reading another post, and then saw you comment.

I see now that something is going wrong with the SSL handshake with the IMAP mail server when trying to connect and download email.

Timestamp: 01/09/2015 12:41:11 Error: An error occurred during a connection to <imapserver>.<ispcompany>.net:993.

SSL received a weak ephemeral Diffie-Hellman key in Server Key Exchange handshake message.

(Error code: ssl_error_weak_server_ephemeral_dh_key)

So I'm guessing that maybe there's a problem with the SSL key / certificate on the ISP's IMAP server. I will give them a call. Plus also do some googling.

If you have anything else to add or any other suggestions that would be fantastic.

[It's strange though that this problem only surfaces fafter an upgrade to TB 38. Maybe it's more fussy now about SSL stuff.]

Thanks again

Glen
