Firefox always opens maximized and does not save window size unless I delete localstore.rdf

I use Linux MInt 13 with Cinnamon 1.6.7. Since the updates to Firefox 17 came through the update manager, the program always opens maximized, no matter what state I close it in. When I de-maximize, it comes up in a different size and position than the last time.

Some googling turned up that this can be due to a corrupted localstore.rdf file, and indeed the window sizing works properly if I delete that before starting.

It also works propoerly in safe mode, but even a fresh install without any add-ons, search engines or anything opens in window mode at first startup, but will always open in the same place as the first time after I move and close it, and if I resize it, it goes back to always opening maximized.

Any help to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello norumaru, did you try to Turn off hardware acceleration ? (in safe mode hardware acceleration is disable).

thank you

Ah, sorry, I forgot to say. I tried that, yes, to no avail.

Ok. You mean (with localstore.rdf file) every time before start firefox must delete localstore.rdf to stay in the correct position the window ?...... awful

try to rename prefs.js to prefs.jsOLD in profile folder and check it again.

see for more info : Corrupt or damaged prefs.js file

thanks again

Well, I don't delete localstore.rdf each time, I just un-maximize and re-arrange, but that is what I would have to do to prevent the maximizing, yes.

Renaming prefs.js didn't do anything either, sadly. I read the rest of that page too and checked for a user.js, but I don't have one.

Thank you for your help!

Firefox uses a default localstore-safe.rdf file, so that might explain why you do not see this in Safe mode.

You can create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

There may be extensions installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

No dice, only more weirdness. I made a new profile and found that Linux Mint adds a couple of extensions by default. I deactivated them and restarted, but FF acts like it did with the new install: It opens windowed, but does not remember its placement, and if I resize, it goes back to opening maximized. When I went back to my normal profile, though, it started up windowed and in the right size, only in the wrong place! Only once though. After closing and re-starting, it is back to starting maximized.

Thank you for the help!

Linux Mint 13, Firefox 17.

I had the same or similar problem in that whenever launching Firefox it would start maximised.

After much searching I tried the following and now Firefox starts normally.

Press function key F11 twice to ascertain if in Full Screen or Maximised.

Make sure you are NOT in full screen, by pressing F11 again if necessary.

Keep pressing Ctrl+- untill the text size is at a minimum.

Unmaximise the window. (Either on the window or by right clicking the Firefox task bar icon and selecting Unmaximise)

Close the Firefox window.

Start Firefox

Unmaximise.

Press Ctrl+0 to reset the text size.

Resize the window to the required size.

Close Firefox

Start Firefox

This should now open Firefox as it was closed.

It worked for me.

Thanks to all of you for your help. I just got the long-awaited update to FFX 18.0 through mintupdate, and sadly it didn't help. Neither did the method eeBus suggested. Any other ideas?

Sigh... I might end up having to reinstall, it really annoys me when my machine doesn't do like I want it to.
