Flash plugin keeps crashing. web page takes 50 secs to react, Flash and Firefox both up to date

For web pages which include video, such as BBC iplayer, flash plugin keeps crashing, making the site un-usable. Web pages which do work do so very slowly. Page freezes for 50 seconds before changing. I have checked and both flash player and Firefox are up to date. I have tried uninstalling Adobe flash and reinstalling.
