When I start thunderbird it hangs. Starting in a terminal, I get the following output:

$ thunderbird --safe-mode 1587220683237 addons.xpi-utils ERROR Syntax error parsing saved XPI JSON data 1587220683237 addons.xpi-utils WARN Rebuilding add-ons database from installed extensions. JavaScript error: resource://gre/modules/Blocklist.jsm, line 2086: TypeError: doc is null

The behavior is the same without safe-mode. I also rolled back my .thunderbird directory from backups to a time period before this started to occur. But the problem is the same. I'm mystified.

I can rename my .thunderbird and start thunderbird successfully, but I'd really like to preserve my data, if possible.

Any thoughts on this?

No, that doesn't seem to be it. Using strace, it appears that thunderbird is not actually hung per se, but rather in polling loop trying to read/parse mail with a large number of time outs.
