Google Predictions Not Working In Google Search Box With Mozilla Firefox

At www.google.com, as I type in Google's search box, no predictions appear like they once did in Mozilla Firefox, but they appear when I use Internet Explorer. I have not done anything different to my computer to make this happen; it just stopped showing predictions.

I have researched and tried to do some fixes, but nothing seems to work. I have gone to Google's Search Settings and changed the preferences; I have uninstalled and then reinstalled Mozilla Firefox (and different versions); I have cleared the cache and cookies, but nothing seems to resolve the issue.

Any step-by-step instructions on how to fix this would be appreciated.

Do you mean the Google search bar on the Navigation Toolbar?

more options

Thanks, Cor-el, for responding. No it's not the Google search bar on the Navigation Toolbar; it's the search box under the GOOGLE logo (in the middle of the page).

If that is the new build-in home page with the URL about:home then that page doesn't show suggestions.

You need to set the real Google page as the home page to see suggestions.

My home page is set to http://www.google.com; sorry for any confusion, but it still does not show suggestions as I type.???

Did you check the Google Settings via the gear shaped icon in the top right corner of the Google site?

more options

Yes, I did. Infrequently, if I open up another window in Mozilla Firefox sometimes the predictions will work, but like I said, hardly ever-baffled.?

If the suggestions do work sometimes then it is possible that Google doesn't have a suggestion for the words that you type.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

I don't think that Google doesn't have a suggestion for the words I type, because I can put anything in there (i.e. Google), and nothing appears.

I didn't change anything on my computer since I last posted, and I've been on the internet briefly here and there, but all of sudden, now at this moment, Google predictions seem to be working but it doesn't put the list right under the search box as it did before, it seems to bring the Google search box up to the left of the screen, and then list the predictions. Sorry, if that sounds confusing. And that's what I meant when I put that it sometimes works in a new window. I don't know what's going on?

But, anyway, back to your post about starting Firefox in Safe Mode; I did but when I go to Tools>Add-ons, there is only something that has Themes and it doesn't do anything when I click on Default (grayed out). When the Firefox Safe Mode dialog box appears, should I be clicking on one of those options?

Also, I don't know if this other problem that occasionally happens would have anything to do with this original problem-sometimes if I type a web address into the address bar up top, a blank page will appear with the word "Done" in the bottom, left corner?

Still having the issue with Google predictions not working as I type. Cor-el, would you please explain step-by-step what I am supposed to do while I am in Firefox Safe Mode? I'm not sure what you mean when you say "to check one of the extensions is causing the problem".

By the way, I am running Mozilla Firefox 7.0 now if that makes a difference.

Thanks.

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.

  • Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
  • Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

It does not work in Safe Mode and there are no extensions to be disabled. And I did go to the link that you posted (https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes), and troubleshooted there and still not working. In addition, now, every time I start Mozilla Firefox, it always says, under the Google search box, RESTORE PREVIOUS SESSION.

What next? Thanks for any suggestions.

more options

If you see the "Restore Previous Session" button then you have the about:home home page in that tab and that page doesn't have suggestions like I wrote above.

If you want to see suggestions then you must open the Google site: http:www.google.com

more options

Thanks for the response. The "Restore Previous Session" is a new problem; I never had that appear before. And I know that I have to be at http:www.google.com for predictions to work, but still it is not working. I'm baffled.

Also, why does the "Restore Previous Session" appear?

Like I wrote above: you appear not to be on the Google site, but on the about:home page if you see that "Restore Previous Session" button.

Did you try to enter www.google.com in the location bar to open the Google site in a Firefox tab?

I understand that I have to enter www.google.com in the address bar like I mentioned above, but as soon as I opened Mozilla Firefox, it would go to the "about:home page" when it never did before. But, anyway, that problem is solved; I went into History and changed a couple of things.

Though, I am still having the original issue being at www.google.com, and no predictions working. I did try to do a clean install of Mozilla Firefox, and it did seem to work for a little while, but then when I put my Bookmarks back, it didn't work again. I don't know if that was a coincidence or if it has something to do with it-any ideas?

Yes, the home page is www.google.com. But still having the issue.

Sorry-it's been a long time since I've posted but...I now have Firefox 9.0.1 and am still having the same issue with Google predictions not working. It works in Internet Explorer.

What other suggestions would you offer to help correct this issue? Thanks.

Did you make sure that you have the http://www.google.com site open?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by http://google.com site being open?

I have Google set as my Home Page and that's where I begin, but when I begin to type, it still does not offer predictions as I type (where it always used to).
