I read else where that if I changed the config preference browser.sessionstore.restore_pinned_tabs_on_demand to True, that it would prevent pinned tabs from loading at started up, but they still load at start up. Am I missing another setting? I only want them to load when I click on them.

Thanks

Until you click on the pinned tab you have no idea what is in it is unless it is in focus when Firefox opens. I think a pinned tab will be likely to start off with cached content in it. It will only load properly and update once the reload option is used or it is open and the date expires.

Related threads:

Since Firefox 47 the default is for tabs to only load when needed and not to be loading in the background.

As a separate issue there is also a setting for them to update and that is by default only once they are outdated.

If you want to prevent all the tabs from reloadig then use about:config to set the pref

 browser.cache.check_doc_frequency to 2

3 is the default value Check for a new version when the page is out of date. (Default) 2 is Never check for a new version - always load the page from cache.

Or toggle the work offline option from the dropdown menu or by using keyboard shortcut Alt+F, K

Do you see a loading throbber on the not selected pinned tabs with the prefs set to <strike>false</strike> true?

  • browser.sessionstore.restore_pinned_tabs_on_demand = true
  • browser.sessionstore.restore_on_demand = true

(edited to change false to true)

Opps. The pref should of course be true to restore prefs on demand. I use code in mozilla.cfg to set this pref by default to true for all profiles, so that I do not need to worry.

I see. Well it is set to True and they still load.

No problems her on Linux with pinned tab and normal tabs.

Do all normal tabs load as well or do these reload on demand?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
