Why won't Thunderbird download messages at startup?

Thunderbird on my laptop will not download messages on startup (although it is set to do so). It does, however, download every ten minutes thereafter. I do not have this problem on my desktop, so the problem doesn't lie with the ISP (besides, it's the same with my Gmail account as well as my regular ISP). The login and password must be OK, too.

This isn't a new thing, but I have lived with it for a while from TB38 to TB44 and from Win7 to Win10, and I think it's time I got it fixed. I have tried unsetting/resetting the Server Settings, to no avail.

Does anyone have any suggestions, please?

Do you close Thunderbird when you put your laptop to sleep?

Does this happen after rebooting the laptop?

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I usually close TB when I've finished (not always, though). This means I may start TB more than once during a session. I close it before I shut down the computer.

Yes, the problem occurs after rebooting. I think it's right to say it has always happened on this machine, but not on any others I've had.

Another oddity (possibly connected) is that the 'Get Messages' button has never worked, although if I click the down arrow and select individual accounts it's OK. This has been the case through several versions of TB, but again only on this laptop (it's a Dell Latitude E5540).

Neither problem is serious, it's easy enough to work around them. I'm more curious as to why it should happen.

You must be using some beta release. I would start by using the most recent release. Version 38.5.1, first offered to Release channel users on January 7, 2016. Download from this link, choosing appropriate language and version for OS.

Report back on results for using up to date release.

FWIW, version 45 beta is out

Thank you for your help. You're right, I'm on a Beta update channel. I downloaded the Version 38.5.1 but then got into one of these stupid 'permissions' arguments with Windows when I tried to install it. By contract Version 45 downloaded and installed without any trouble at all. Maybe it's because I'm trying to go back several versions that Windows(10) objects.

The issue is not critical, and I can perfectly well download manually on load. So I've decided to leave things as they are rather than waste time trying to over-rule Win10.

Thanks again for your help.

Using a different anti virus on your different machines?

No, same Kaspersky IS on all machines.

And, now I think of it, probably the same Beta version of TB on all machines too, so that's not the problem. I'm away from base at the moment so I cannot actually check that, but I believe it to be the case,

It's not, of course, a huge effort to make the initial download manually. It's really a matter of understanding why it should be like that.
