Phishing and malware attachments/downloads are serious problems.
Firefox has only limited anti-malware features. The built-in download manager can integrate (at least on Windows) with your existing antivirus software. Some destinations may be blocked based on reputation information from StopBadware.
For protection against deceptive messages and dangerous files, you may want to look into add-ons and third party security products.
