Firefox will not remember my passwords no matter how many times I tell it to save them.

Firefox has not been saving my passwords and every time I open it, it opens 2 tabs welcoming me to Firefox. This has been happening for about 2 months. I'll save something and then the next time I open the browser, it acts like it's the first time. I do have an "Old Firefox Data" folder but when I go to the profile section it shows a million profiles and I'm not sure how to sync my old stuff and have Firefox actually remember it.

Do you mean there are a million profiles in the Old Firefox Data folder, or in the about:profiles screen, or somewhere else?

One of the features of MacOS is that you have the option to run Firefox in a temporarily environment from the DMG installer file, or to run Firefox in a permanent environment by installing Firefox to the Apps folder. There also can be some confusion about what exactly the dock icon does. Could you take a look at the following article and make sure you have a permanent installation and then do whatever MacOS requires to make sure your dock icon is connected to that installation:

Note that you will have to cleanup the no longer needed profile manually if they aren't listed in the Profile Manager and can't be removed that way.

Firefox uses two locations for the Firefox profile folder. One location for your personal data (e.g. bookmarks) and another location for temporary files like the disk cache, so you need to remove the profiles in both locations.

Location used for the main profile that keeps your personal data (Root Directory on about:profiles).

  • ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/<profile>

Location used for the disk cache and other temporary files (Local Directory on about:profiles).

  • ~/Library/Caches/Firefox/Profiles/<profile>
