plugins could not be verified firefox esr 52
I'm using Firefox ESR 52.9 because it is the latest version that the Pocket extension still works with. It just suddenly (without any updates or warning) disabled the AdBlock Plus, Roboform, and Google Shortcuts extensions (all of which were working perfectly fine yesterday) because "they cannot be verified." and it isn't giving me the option to re-enable them.
The info at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/add-ons-disabled-or-fail-to-install-firefox?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=add-ons-failing-install-firefox and https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2019/05/04/update-regarding-add-ons-in-firefox/ is not helpful because the verison of Firefox I have doesn't show the studies option that is referenced there.
And an update that is to Firefox ESR 53 or later also isn't useful because then my old Pocket extension won't work (and that extension is KEY for me). Please provide an immediate fix for Firefox ESR 52.9.

Meanwhile, if you want to do some testing:
New Profile Test
This takes about 3 minutes, plus the time to test your problem site(s).
Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.
Click the "Create a New Profile" button, then click Next. Assign a name like YTDownload, ignore the option to relocate the profile folder, and click the Finish button.
After creating the profile, scroll down to it and click the Launch profile in new browser button.
Firefox should open a new window that looks like a brand new, uncustomized installation. (Your existing Firefox window(s) should not be affected.) Please ignore any tabs enticing you to connect to a Sync account or to activate extensions found on your system so we can get a clean test.
Then install your favorite downloader and test it by itself in case one of them is conflicting with the others.
Any improvement?
When you are done with the experiment, you can close the extra window without affecting your regular Firefox profile. (YTDownload will remain available for future testing.)

When typing the question the site led me to two existing topics for discussion. I didn't know I could create a new question since the search came back with what it believed to be the appropriate subject.
I'll try to follow your instructions but I've never done what you've suggested so it will take some time. That said, something about the ScaleCraft note about cutting and pasting the text from the reddit article seems to have accomplished something. Three of the buttons on the youtube screen have reappeared (Firefox add ons). One doesn't work and two do; I'm not sure why. I'll try what you suggested above on Thursday 9/12 when my mind is fresh.

Some number of hours after doing the reddit suggestion one of the add on buttons simply disappeared after using it twice. So I repeated the cut/paste and got a different result (in the screen shot). It's as if my browser is haunted. I'll try the Profile instructions Thurs 9/12 and see what happens.
Okay, I created the new profile and added downloader extensions. I'm not really seeing a difference. Since it doesn't affect the main profile the one button that suddenly disappeared yesterday hasn't reappeared. There had been instructions some time back on what folder to go into to find the .jsp (?) files for all the plug-ins and extensions so that they can be saved and, if lost, replaced. Can someone tell me in what folder they are so I can copy them elsewhere and save them? It's somewhere in \Library\Application _____\ Firefox \ ______ but I don't remember.
