Can't find/retrieve Thunderbird archives on migrating to new computer.

A hard disk crash (it happens to us all one day!) persuaded me that it was time to replace my aging Mint Maya computer with another, preloaded with Linux Mint Sylvia. Having suffered disk failure in the past, I backed-up conscientiously by regularly cloning the hard disk. Even though the back-up disk is bootable, it would make no sense to overwrite or replace the Sylvia disk with the Maya one so all the applications were manually transferred, with little difficulty – all, that is, except my Thunderbird e-mails, calendar and address book. Oddly, even although the crash took place on the 18th July, restoration of the Thunderbird account on the Sylvia machine restored all the e-mails in my local inbox – ie everything since the beginning of July - despite the fact that all the associated emails had been downloaded, and thus presumably removed, from the ISP’s server right up to the crash date. Missing was everything in my Sent box and all the Thunderbird local archive files, stretching back over several years, in which my e-mails are stored every six months. I have tried everything suggested to retrieve the backed-up files but to no avail. Importing declares that there is nothing to import and an examination of the profile files, on the back-up disk, shows them to contain nothing more than those of the new account on the Sylvia machine - ie virtually nothing. Running Thunderbird from the back-up hard disk also only offers the new account, without archive, or sent files and with an empty address book and nothing in the calendar. Since all that latter information must, I assume, be present on the cloned disk I have to ask, “Where is it and how do I import it to the new computer?”

Use 'ImportExportTools' addon extension to import mbox files.

If you are talking about a POP mail account then import them into the POP mail account.

  • Right click on pop mail account name in folder pane and use 'ImportExporttools' > Import mbox' option.

If imap account, suggest you import into 'Local Folders' mail account. In offline mode:

  • Use the 'Copy to' option on highlighted emails to put them back into the correct imap folder.
  • Then go online mode to update server.
