Firefox (and recently Thunderbird) hang on odd numbered program starts.

Some time ago, Firefox began to hang when I tried to run it right after booting my computer. If I killed the hung Firefox.exe process and tried again, it would start right up. (BTW, when I say 'hung' I mean the process stopped showing any CPU usage for more than 30 minutes according to Process Explorer from Microsoft.) If I exit the program and later try to start it again, the same sequence occurs. This also means that Firefox can NEVER update itself, since an update requires the running copy to exit and a new copy to start, but the new copy ALWAYS hangs.

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing Firefox. I have tried running the FireFoxNetInstaller and allowing Firefox to perform a "complete" reset (I miss my add-ons!) and the behavior continues. In fact, Thunderbird recently started exhibiting the same problem!

  • NOTHING* else on my system has any issue similar to this. I am running Windows 10 Home, build 1709, fully update-to-date. I use ESET Smart Security 10 for AV services. This is especially frustrating now that Firefox has improved so much this year (I use it at work all the time without issues.) I'm open to trying out whatever is necessary to get this fixed.

OK, finally had time to mess with this and the idea of totally removing FF (and TB) seems to have worked. My method was:

  1. Use the ancient MozBackup tool to backup everything for FF (and TB) to files in My Documents.
  2. Use Revo Uninstaller Pro to uninstall FF (and TB) followed by an Advanced/deep scan to find and remove all leftover crap that the uninstaller leaves behind in the registry and on the disk drive.
  3. Download a full installer for the latest FF (and TB) and run it. When the program launches, do the minimum to get it "happy" and then EXIT without creating an account, importing, etc.)
  4. Use MozBackup to restore everything EXCEPT EXTENSIONS for FF (and TB).
  5. Start/stop/restart FF a few times until it discovers all of the restored settings. Strangely, TB gets this right on the first start, but FF took three tries.

Now both programs are starting & stopping on demand, without requiring me to manually kill the process on odd-numbered executions. Unfortunately, I have lost all of my extensions. Sigh.

Well since have uninstalled before see if have done it this way.

uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note if never run this it should have a shortcut made to Start Menu fron t and center, if never run it like below, should not be to bad, Win 10 will 300gig plus to delete) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 57.0.2 with a Full Version Installer https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

Might need a little help after the uninstall : Repair System Registry and Files

(FOR DOING Above & Below - WINDOWS All OTHER VERSIONS - Use Search To Find Command Prompt ** Enter CMD.exe to Find COMMAND PROMPT Then Right Click & RUN AS ADMIN)

To run the SFC command use the Windows key + X keyboard shortcut to open the Power User menu and select Command Prompt (Admin). Type "SFC /SCANNOW" (without quotes or copy/paste) and press Enter. For more information on using SFC, please refer to the Microsoft KB: Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

Run the Windows Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) and System File Checker (SFC) tools as Administrator. The DISM and SFC tools scan the integrity of the Windows image and all protected system files replaces corrupted, damaged and incorrect versions. (FOR DOING Above & Below - WINDOWS All OTHER VERSIONS - Use Search To Find Command Prompt ** Enter CMD.exe to Find COMMAND PROMPT Then Right Click & RUN AS ADMIN) Type "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" (without quotes or copy/paste) and press Enter.

Windows 10 To run the DISM command use the Windows key + X keyboard shortcut to open the Power User menu, then select Command Prompt (Admin). Type "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" (without quotes or copy/paste) and press Enter. Reboot After.

Note : SFC fixes files locally using files found on your system. Note : DISM goes up to Microsoft for new ones.
