Why do they do this? I hate upgrades. If they up graded the alphabet as much as they upgrade computer software- it'd be a thousand letters long.

Why? To provide new features and security fixes to Firefox.

If you don't want any more Firefox updates, simple fix - just turn them off. Tools > Options -> Advanced --> Update = Never check for updates ...
