can i setup a 1 click bookmarks list, like windows?

i find Firefox bookmarks too complex and hard to use. lots of options i'll never need. is it possible to set up a one click bookmarks list, like windows? when i was running XP pro, i could still use my windows bookmarks with Firefox. with windows 7 i have not been able to find a way to do that. reddirtranger

What do you find complex about the Firefox bookmarks?

Bookmarking the current tab works this way:

  • Clicking the star on the Navigation toolbar will bookmark the page in the "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder and the star turns blue to show that
  • Bookmarks -> "Bookmark This Page" (Ctrl+D) will bookmark the page in the Bookmarks Menu folder (you need to confirm that)
  • "Bookmark This Page" can be accessed via the right-click context menu in the browsing area or via the Bookmarks menu in the Firefox menu button drop down or menu bar (Alt+B)
  • If the URL in the current tab is bookmarked and the star is highlighted blue then click this highlighted star or use "Bookmark This Page/Edit This Bookmark" (Ctrl+D) to edit the properties of the bookmark like name and location and move the bookmark to another folder or remove the bookmark
  • If you bookmark a page then "Bookmark This Page" in the Bookmarks menu as well as the tooltip of the star changes to "Edit This Bookmark".

There are three main Bookmarks folders and bookmarks can only be created in one of those folders and its sub folders.

  • The "Bookmarks Toolbar" folder stores the bookmarks that you see on the Bookmarks Toolbar (View > Toolbars; tap the Alt key or press F10 to show the Menu Bar)
  • The "Bookmarks Menu" folder stores bookmarks that show in the Bookmarks menu and are created via "Bookmarks > Bookmark This Page" or via "Bookmark This Link" in the right-click context menu.
  • The "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder stores bookmarks that are created by clicking the star at the right end of the location bar.

Firefox's bookmarks are stored separate from IE's. It's possible someone has created a tool to allow you to access them outside of Firefox, but since the best approach depends on your way of working, I haven't done a search at this point until I better understand what you want to do.

Regarding the Windows XP vs. Windows 7 difference: is the problem that Favorites no longer appears in the expected locations, such as:

  • Start menu: if you right-click the start "orb" and open Properties, then click the Customize button, there is a long list of features you can add/remove from the Start menu. Here you can enable Favorites and then it will appear on the right side of the menu (at on mine it's on the right side). As long as Firefox is your default browser, choosing a Windows Favorite from this list will launch it in Firefox.
  • Somewhere else: ??

There is an extension named Plain Old Favorites that creates a Favorites menu on Firefox's main menu bar. Is that what you were using before? I don't know whether it still works, but you can read about it here: http://www.iosart.com/firefox/plainoldfavorites/
