I reset the value for browser.newtab.url a couple weeks ago. Worked then, but didn't stick. Still shows on the value, but Ask homepage loads instead.

I followed the directions---- about:config---etc. It worked for a while. Then didn't. Somehow got pipe lines in it. Deleted and put in the correct url. Worked a while. Now it doesn't and the value still shows the homepage I set. I copied and pasted the url again and it doesn't work. Ask home page loads instead. Help, help, help. My home page is http://www.stltoday.com/....... I HATE ASK. NO need for it. Firefox has a search bar....so why have an Ask page???? Ask seems to me like a roach. You can't get rid of it. It sneaks in on other coat tails or in the flap of a sack. The search bar on the Firefox browser is the best thing other than Firefox reliability. IE removing the search bar really disappointed me and pushed me over to Firefox as my preferred browser. Not fond of Chrome either. NOW, add the option to have new tabs open with homepage to Internet Options. Don't make us jump hoops to do it. Many people I know do not have the skills to figure it out, even with help from the Support forum.

hello, this sounds like a problem possibly caused by adware on your pc.

  1. please go to the firefox menu ≡ > addons > extensions & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc).
  2. also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there.
  3. finally, run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the free version of malwarebytes & adwcleaner, which are specialised in adware and browser hijackers.
