  - w/o words,
  - with a darkened button that has no text
  - a '?' appears in front of web page).

Only menu option is FIREFOX, so I can't proceed with the browser

When I 'blindly' select the button or the '?', nothing happens

I have

- restarted my MacBook Pro (OS X Yosemite - v. 10.10.2)
- un-istalled/ re-installed Firefox

hi oravocal, this might be an issue caused by the aol toolbar. please try launching firefox into safemode by pressing the shift key after you double-click its desktop icon, go to the firefox menu ≡ > addons > extensions and disable the toolbar there. Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems
