I have been having trouble opening many web pages on Mozilla Firefox. Eventually I get the dreaded "The Connection was Reset." I have tried updating the browser, resetting Firefox, disabling extensions, opening in Safe Mode, but these do not work. The only thing that seems to work is if I close out the browser completely, reopen it again, go to this same web page again and it will open. Please help. It is very frustrating to have this continually happen. Many web pages open right away, but many have this same problem on my PC. I have updated to the latest version at the moment, 33.0. I have a Dell PC running Windows XP. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I'd rather not have to start using Internet Explorer. Thanks for your help. This even occurs when I go to update Firefox. No data is transmitted. So I quit Firefox, reopen it, and then the download works.

Dear FredMcD: I ran the Norton Removal tool, but still have the same result. "error checking Windows Firewall 1 Service(s) from Norton/Symantec (Norton) detected 1 processes from Symantec Corporation detected" And cannot turn on Firewall. When I go to the Security Center and click on Windows Firewall, I get the messages: "Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service?" I click YES and then it says: "Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service." Thanks any way for your suggestions.

Weird, ok so the listed extensions in the troubleshooter may have picked something up that was not showing. Do you notice any of the mentioned plugins in the profile extension folder?

Have we tried resetting the internet options from the control panel yet? " 3.) Go to internet explorer options in control panel. Click advanced-reset. Click reset again. This will change any connection settings that firefox uses back to the default." from previous reference.

Dear Guigs2: I do NOW see that I have both those plug-ins (sorry): Adobe Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in, version 12.1.3.153 and version 12.0.7.148. With the notation: "ASK TO ACTIVATE"

I've reset the internet options along with also checking off "Delete personal settings"

Still same result. Thanks again anyway for all of your help.

Ok so to sum up what we have tried new profile, new firewall but the previous one is still detected, virus scan, private window worked for a little bit but the connection resets, update did not help, reset the internet options from the control panel. Try calling your internet provider if contacting norton does not help with connection reset error.

Are you using a proxy for your network connection?

Tools---> Options ---> Advanced ----> (Network Tab) ----> Settings ----> and check "No proxy"

I don't have access to firewall. I'll have to see what Norton can tell me about still seeing them when I ran EnumProcess.exe.

Proxy was set for "Auto detect." I've now checked off "No proxy" per your instructions.

Norton Firewall is accessed thru the main Norton program. On my Norton 360, it's under Security.

Hi FredMcD,

I contacted Norton, they connected to my PC and deleted a whole bunch of files from my registry that were still there. They were almost finished but after a reboot, they could no longer connect.

When I run EnumProcess.exe now, it now only says: Error checking firewall, No Known Processes Detected.

However, I still can't turn on the firewall from my control panel. I guess this PC is pretty messed up.

In what way? Did you talk to them at the time?

Try to do the Full Install of your Norton program. If you already paid for it, log in to your account. If there is still a problem, call support.

In the meanwhile, go to your security settings and start Win firewall.

Hi FredMcD, I contacted Norton by Chat. I wanted all of Norton removed and I do NOT want it reinstalled. I use Avast Free now. Norton was using up a lot of my resources.

I still cannot start my windows firewall.

This is the message I get from microsoft when I try and download: Microsoft Security Essentials is no longer available for Windows XP.

more options

Ahh. So much for that. What anti-virus do you want to use? Does it have a firewall?

Dear FredMcD,

I found Security essentials download from another site and downloaded it and installed. After it finished it gave me the message: "Windows Firewall is still turned off for some unknown error. Try turning it on manually from Windows Security Center"

So I tried again turning it on but no luck. I get the message: "Could not start the Security Center service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start."

I use AVAST Free Antivirus, but I do not have their firewall.

Open the above page. Go down to the 3. At the far right, enter firewall into the search bar.
