I am constantly nagged by ad-ons thanking me for using their product. Worst of these is "Colourful Tabs" which seems to open a thank you tab almost every day. Is there a way to prevent the tab opening other than removing the ad-on? I have no problem with their wanting to maintain a relationship with me but a simple email once a month would suffice.

You may have ad / mal-ware. Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.
