the firefox browser on my mac 10.4 operating system has been hijacked by something called 'Apple security system' and I am wondering how to get it back.

A warning from 'Apple security center' appears on my screen periodically and freezes my firefox browser. The only way I can regain the use of firefox is to unplug the computer. I have tried simply restarting the computer but the 'warning' makes it impossible to shut down firefox and as a result the restart mechanism doesn't work.

It's probably a variant of Mac Defender. There are instructions on the Apple site on how to remove it. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4650
