virus affecting only firefox, can't close without using task mgr. should I uninstall

more options

Was browsing in facebook in the group "popup campers". Opened a posting & immediately got a loud beeping & a pop-up screen saying I had a virus & indicating I should call a number for a tech to fix the problem. Tried to close Firefox, to no effect. Finally had to use task manager to close Firefox. Used Avast to do a lengthy boot scan. After re-booting, tried explorer and Chrome browsers, they worked fine. Tried Firefox & again the loud beeping & window warning that there was a virus. Still couldn't close Firefox without using task manager. I uninstalled Firefox. Would downloading and re-installing Firefox be ok?

Hi Larry, when you "kill" Firefox using the Task Manager, at the next startup, Firefox tries to restore all the windows and tabs you had open, even the ones with bad content.

In this case, I suggest trying to bypass those session history files so Firefox is forced to start up with your home page. Please roll up your sleeves because this is going to take some deep clicking.

First, please set Windows to show hidden files and file extensions. These articles have the steps:

Second, copy the following, paste it into the system search box, and press Enter to run it:

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

That should open a new window listing one or more semi-randomly-named folders. This folder (or one of these folders) contains your Firefox data as of the last time you used it.

(If that shortcut doesn't work, you can manually navigate to:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles)

Double-click into the folder and look for any files with these names and if you find them, right-click > Rename them:

  • sessionstore.js => sessionstore-bad.js
  • sessionstore.bak => sessionstore-bad.bak

Then right-click the sessionstore-backups folder and rename it to sessionstore-backups-bad so we can keep it for possible future salvage operations.

Now you can reinstall Firefox and when it start up, it should have all your old settings except that it won't open the old windows and tabs from the crashed session.

You can download a full installer from the following page (scroll down to your preferred language):

https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ For maximum plugin compatibility, choose the 32-bit version.

Success?
