Firefox freezes, high HDD usage, PC crash ?!!

When I run Firefox, it freeze (sometimes instantly, sometimes after some seconds), the hard disc usage is very high (the led is always on), no other program is responding. Sometimes, after time of retrying, I access to task_manager and kill the process. Sometimes, i reboot the PC. How can I do ?

I have had this problem, and I fixed it (I think) quite by accident. One day my cookies had vanished, and I restored via MozBackup. Not only did my error go away, but my browsing was much quicker.
