I'm using a laptop to configure network devices using their GUI interfaces. Depending on our needs, etc. the connections may be via http or https. AND this condition may change in the midst of preparing a device with new firmware or with a new configuration. It seems that if a device (by IP address) is accessed via https and then the access mode switches to http, it's no longer possible to connect at all. This makes one believe that the device has "bricked" and starting all over is necessary. If the same thing happens again, no matter the procedure, it becomes most time-consuming AND frustrating. It could result in the device being RMA'd or retired. So this is a serious matter.

I have learned that settings can be undone by clearing them. But this is a not-so-often procedure and is a deviation from real work.

Is there a way to have Firefox NOT remember exceptions so that http OR https will work more or less directly when tried on the same IP address?

This is not a Browser caused changed but the site or hardware doing that. Browser uses the protocol given to it by the site not the other way around.

You can check the SiteSecurityServiceState.txt file in the profile folder for references.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

If what WestEnd says is correct then this shouldn't be a problem?

I was rather sure about what I said:

If I access: 192.168.1.1 and it asks for an exception (and I grant the exception) then I'll get in the URL bar: https://192.168.1.1/ and the connection will happen.

If 192.168.1.1 switches to NOT using https, if I enter plain old 192.168.1.1 the URL bar entry continues to switch to https://192.168.1.1/ and I don't get a connection at all.

Then, if I delete the exception under Certificates/Server, it will connect Not Secure. But deleting the exception is a pain to have to do frequently. So, I'd like it to at least delete all the exceptions when I close Firefox .. something like that.

I didn't see any references in the SiteSecurityServiceState.txt file..... I was able to set up a Profile but now I'm not sure what to do with it.
