Shockwave installation interference with home page

Just installed Shockwave Flash 18.0.0.194 at Firefox recommendation. My current Shockwave Flash was so out of date, Firefox was blocking use of it. But now I can't connect to AOL.com - the screen is blank; there is no error message. This has happened with Adobe plug-ins before, and I had to reverse the installation. Can you suggest how to resolve this problem?
