The update 3.6.28 I was just forced to install lost all my bookmarks, won't let me input new ones, and autocomplete doesn't work at all.

(At least I think it was updated. I got a message that I had to update and that it would do it on restart.) I'm on an iBook G4 with 10.5.8 (the most up-to-date system available for this computer). I've restarted my computer, and still the problems are there. It's strange since not only has my whole history been wiped, but when I try to add things back to the bookmarks again, nothing happens. I click on the "bookmark this page" and literally nothing happens. It's also not saving any of my history at all, even though in the Privacy preferences page everything is fine (Remember History is showing, as is History and Boookmarks). Help!?

Aha! The problem was a "places.sqlite.corrupt" something-or-other! I had been trying to follow the directions on http://kb.mozillazine.org/Bookmarks_history_and_toolbar_buttons_not_working_-_Firefox, but I couldn't find my profiles folder (even with a search). But that link you offered for finding it (with the Help/Troubleshooting Information menu, and the Profile Directory option to "show in finder") got me there. And then I quit out of Firefox, and deleted all the other places files, and renamed the "places.sqlite.corrupt" to "places.sqlite". And when I restarted Firefox, all was well again! Thanks!

And as for my computer being "outdated" there's nothing that can be done about that. :-)

  1. Quit Firefox.
  2. Create a backup copy of your profile folder in a safe location.
  3. Uninstall Firefox and delete your Firefox profile folder as well (NOT the backup copy you created earlier).
  4. From the following page download and install Firefox 16, which is the last version that runs on Mac OS X 10.5.
  5. Import your bookmarks from the automated backups found in the backup copy of your profile folder. They're in the /bookmarkbackups subfolder.

Note that both your operating system and browser expose your system to security vulnerabilities because they're outdated.
