I often use Tor to browse the internet, but after I recently updated to Firefox 11.0 (Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu 1.0) I don't know how to disable Tor or to open a non-Tor browser; Tor button is gone from the bottom right corner. Thanks!

I'm running Firefox 11.0 (Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu 1.0) in Ubuntu 10.04. Ever since updating to Firefox 11.0, I have been unable to turn off Tor, or to browse without using Tor. There used to be a button in the lower-right that allowed me to toggle between Tor enabled/disabled, but it is no longer there. I have been unable to find any mention of this in the Tor documentation, so I'm asking here in hopes that someone has had a similar issue and has been able to solve it.

Hi,

You can try to Enable the Extension in Tools (Alt + T) > Add-ons, or right-click on it and Find Updates. Please note that if the Add-on Bar is hidden you may have to enable it by right-clicking on the + after the last tab. If all fails, you can also try to set No proxy in Firefox Edit (Alt + E) > Preferences > Advanced > Network > Settings. Options > Advanced

I don't know if you've changed your Ubuntu (Linux) user agent on purpose, but you currently have a user agent that identifies you as Firefox/3.6.3 on Windows 7 instead of Firefox 11.

  • Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 Firefox/3.6.3

Hi Cor-el, I'm not sure what you're seeing, but it could be that because I can't turn off Tor, you are seeing the user agent for one of the proxies? I don't really know what a user agent is though. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

Hi Vivek,

Thanks for the excellent reply. I'm not very knowledgeable, so I appreciated the thoroughness of the steps you offered.

In add-ons under extensions, it informed me that the torbutton add-on is not supported in Firefox 11, which was good to know. In edit>preferences>advanced>network>settings, setting it to "no proxy" disabled Tor, and putting it back to manual proxy enabled it again, so that seems like a good work-around.

I know on Windows, some folks I've seen have a separate Tor browser now called Aurora, which seems to be a new release from Firefox? I only really found that today, but it could well be the solution.

Thanks again,
