Huge use of RAM for displaying a single webpage - is this right?

In an attempt to enable Firefox 6.0.2 to work more efficiently and not take minutes to effect a change of page, etc., I've deleted all the Cache and Active Logins, but have found that 138MB of RAM is still being used to display a single webpage on one tab. The use of the CPU in this state also varies between 1-5%. What can be done to make Firefox more efficient in its use of RAM and thereby not run so slowly and lock up so frequently?
