Previous versions I could adjust the tab width downward using the process on this page.

http://www.watchingthenet.com/firefox-tip-how-to-set-a-minimum-tab-width.html

- Open Firexfox and type about:config in the Address Bar.

- In the Filter Bar type browser.tabs.tabMinWidth (this will display just the browser.tabs.tabMinWidth parameter)

- Double click on browser.tabs.tabMinWidth and in the Enter integer value pop up window, change the number (Value) to anything under 40 ( I have mine set to 20). Click OK to set the new Value.

- Exit Firefox and re-open.

Now this routine is not working. I can set the number lower and the lower number is retained when I check tabMinWidth but tabs stay the same width when I reopen FF.

That method will not work in Firefox 4. You can set the tab widths with the Custom Tab Width extension - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/custom-tab-width

Seems to work fine. Thanks.

It would be handy if there were a few more instructions on the web page. It took me a couple of minutes to find where to set the size.

  1. Tools
  2. Add-Ons
  3. Extensions
  4. Click on Options for Custom Tab Width
  5. Enter min/max width in popup box
  6. OK
  7. And then your computer will restart
