Crashing at startup, Internet explorer crashes also. Been to adobe before.

I was attempting to contact Adobe. Have had a lot of problems with their program since Jan. 2010. Cannot open any Adobe files, and I was looking for a phone number, closed their site. A Mozilla box opened to update, I clicked on it and after that I could not get on the Internet. That was Thursday Aug. 5, 2010 around 5:03PM Central Time. Also, Internet Explorer will not open. We have recently changed to ATT-U Verse. Spoke w/them today, sending a tech out tomorrow morning. Possibly a line problem? System is hard wired. Firefox nor Internet Explorer are listed on Ad/Remove in Control Panel. Did I have a bogus Update box?
