youtube frozen in firefox only. advances frame by frame with spacebar but won't play normally

Only in my firefox browser, youtube is frozen on the first frame of any video I play. It advances frame by frame with spacebar but won't play normally. It's almost as if a pause has been turned on but I can't figure out how. I've restarted the browser and restarted my mac but it still is happening. It does not happen on my iphone. Oly on my laptop.
