I have updated. To do so now requires an account which I have created, but the final step apparently requires a link to a google or apple account which do not want to do - and will not do. This I suppose, means I have not completed the download. If i restart my Mac, firefox and everything in it (passwords, bookmarks etc) disappears and I have to use ABOUT:PROFILES to find my version with all my info. Its very frustrating. what am I doing wrong ?

Sorry to hear about this problem. On Mac, users sometimes end up with a temporary installation rather than a persistent one. Could you review the following article and make sure that Firefox is running from your persistent installation in the Applications folder, and not from the DMG file?

How to download and install Firefox on Mac

Also, of course, if you don't use a Smartphone or don't want to run Firefox on your Smartphone, you can skip that part.
