Hi rholthaus, welcome to Firefox.
Firefox may ask for a Master Password to unlock your saved logins when it wants to connect to your Firefox Account (for Sync), or when you load a login page that Firefox has a saved login for. This is a simple popup box with a one-line form. This article has more info on this feature: Use a Primary Password to protect stored logins and passwords.
Or are you getting something like:
- a CAPTCHA challenge, such as wavy letters or clicking pictures of cars
- a requirement to enter a code from a text message or similar "second factor"
Most likely that is coming from a website. Depending on the site, the fact that you satisfied that challenge may be saved in a cookie so future visits from the same browser can bypass the challenge. If you use a private window or set Firefox to clear cookies, then unfortunately the website will have no way to know you passed the challenge before, and you likely would need to do it again in your next Firefox session.
Does it sound like that could be the situation?
Are you using Avast security software?
Thank you for response... I do not feel that it is related to a master password as I do not use saved logins. I understand the need for the challenge on the first visit but I don't think I am blocking cookies or tracking and should not get the challenge each visit. Somehow the cookie is not getting set or updated. As I stated ... I was using IE 11 with no problem but now have a problem since I switched to Firefox. Image file attached.
Yes, if a site sets a cookie with a future expiration, Firefox will normally keep it until then.
Are you using Firefox with its default settings or have you made any adjustments related to tracking, privacy, history or cookies?
What are your cookie settings? Are you blocking cookies?
You can try to create a cookie allow exception for the involved domains with the correct protocol (https://).
- Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
Cookies and Site Data -> Exceptions
Firefox shows the shield icon at the left end of the location/address bar in case Content Blocking is blocking content.
- click the shield icon for more detail and possibly disable the protection
You can check the Web Console about what content is blocked
- "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Web Developer
- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/content-blocking
I have set the site to not block anything (trackers or cookies) and tried many times with the same results. However, this time .. for some reason I do not understand ... it is now working.. go figure... another pixie dust repair that will probably run into again in the future. Thank you all for your replies and whoever you are that sent the pixie dust!

Could have been 'cached' Cookies.
