Every time I open Thunderbird it now wants me to sign in via Google. How do I stop this?

Every time I open Thunderbird it now wants me to sign in via Google. How do I stop this?

Chosen solution

If this is a POP mail account or an Imap account using connection security SSL/TLS then you need to logon to webmail account using a browser and select to use 'less secure apps'. Usually, you get a prompt for a password which fails. Gmail may be deliberately blocking you if this is not selected.

If you are being directed to a google login which appears in a browser. If this is an Imap mail account using connection security OAuth2 then Google/gmail will prompt you to logon using a browser login to check it really is you and then a token is added to the gmail account and stored in same place as passwords. From then onwards the token is used and not the password. If you update the password, then the token should get auto updated.

In all cases, you need to make sure that you have selected the checkbox for Password Manager to remember the passwords.

Are the passwords and/or OAuth token stored in Thunderbird? Check to see if they are saved.

  • 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Security' > 'Passwords' tab
  • click on 'Saved Passwords' button.
  • Click on 'Show Passwords' button.

Do you see 'mailbox://' entry for pop mail accounts? Do you see 'imap://' entry for imap mail accounts? Do you see 'oauth://' entry for gmail accounts? Do you see 'smtp://' entry for each account? Are all passwords correct?

Is it empty ? If you are using a product like CCleaner to clean up files then it is possible that product keeps deleting your saved passwords or other session files. Note, Anti-Virus products can also perform cleaning up of files. Suggest you make any Thunderbird folder exempt.

Please tell the forum if you are using POP or IMAP and whether you are using OAuth2 as connection security? Please also say whether this is a pop up window asking for password OR whether this is google auto opening a browser asking for login. Please state what Anti-Virus you are using and whether you have any other program like CCleaner installed. Confirm what you see in saved passwords.

Thanks Toad-Hall, Much appreciated. The problem was simple in that Google detected what they thought was a false outside connection to my account. I signed in via Google and clicked that there was no violation and the problem was solved. Richo777
