Just followed your recommendation to go to the menu and the troubleshooting. I clicked on 'Profile folder' and it won't let me open! Please help.

I just opened up my laptop to discover that Firefox was completely blank bar an open page for renewing my guarantee for my laptop. I had a lot of saved bookmarks and tabs on my browser that I really need for work and for my studies. I am not so concerned about the fact that my history has gone, but this goes to show how much we can't trust computer/internet programs/applications because how do I know that they are all going to be there in the morning?! I really need this information back. I checked everything: bookmarks folder; restore; undo. I even went to the menu and the help tab on the browser, then on to troubleshooting where I tried to open my folder but it keeps telling me that access is denied! Why did you have to do this?! Can you please! help me restore my bookmarks and tabs (for at least the last 8months)? I would be extremely grateful!

Hi, sorry having issues. Please look on the Desktop for a Folder called OldFirefoxProfile if it is great as some data will be in that.

If can bring up the MS Task Manager in Windows 7 Will have to Search as no longer remember where it is, somewhere in Start Menu System Tools I think. Task Manager is the thing you get When go Ctrl+Alt+Delete and want you to look for Firefox running if it is Click it then End Task.

Now should be able to do the below : Check if there is 2 Profile Folders. You want the Oldest one.

What's What in the Profile :

  • bookmarks and history: places.sqlite
  • bookmark backups: compressed .jsonlz4 JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder
  • cookies.sqlite for the Cookies
  • formhistory.sqlite for saved autocomplete Form Data
  • logins.json (passwords) and key4.db (58+) or key3.db (57 and older) (decryption key) for Passwords saved in the Password Manager
  • if you only have key3.db then make sure to remove an existing key4.db
  • cert9.db (58+) or cert8.db (57 and older) for (intermediate) certificates stored in the Certificate Manager
  • if you only have cert8.db then make sure to remove an existing cert9.db
  • persdict.dat for words you added to the spelling checker dictionary
  • permissions.sqlite for Permissions and possibly content-prefs.sqlite for other website specific data (Site Preferences)
  • sessionstore.jsonlz4 for open tabs and pinned tabs (see also the sessionstore-backups folder)

fyi for the future :

Hi, thank you, I will try to get onto that as soon as possible. I also forgot to mention before, ( I don't know if I should create a new question for this?) that I was sent an email from a complete stranger who knew my password, name and email. I solely use firefox, and when doing special work, I used your private browser. I am also upset by this as I don't understand how it could've happened. What do I do? I delete cookies daily, sometimes more, and make sure I do everything securely. This should not happen, should it?! I will let you know re. your answer above. Thanks.

Hi, no it should not. What was the context that the person approached by email ? As in USA a lot of companies have been hacked and info stolen and you should be monitoring your credit reports for identity theft. They are free if do yourself and think something happened with that but can not remember the news for that.

Also your States publish your roles for voter lists. Wifi is easy to hack with your passwords flying through the air for anyone to grab both at home and on the street.

Some sort of major firewall and A/V along with a anti-malware program that pay for and has real time scanning.

Mobile protection also is needed.

Not use same password for everything and make sure your router is up to date with hardware flashes and that you reboot it often. If it is old then replace it.

There is a scam going around where someone mines a file of old logins from a data breach several years ago and sends blackmail message claiming to have a porn tape. That is a scam. Do not reply. Do not pay. However, if you still use whatever old password was listed, make sure you no longer use that password for any accounts.

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that allows access to the profile folder

You can do a malware check jut to be sure.
