Are you using Firefox 52 or ESR?

As of Firefox 53 in March 2017, WinXP and Vista won't be supported any longer.

I have Firefox 45.0 version, is this the problem? I though I had the latest version, because it told me so. If not how do I correct it?

This is the highest version that supports Windows XP If you are posting not from the sick computer, if it is also an XP, download the full installer from here;

Install Older Version Of Firefox {web link} Be sure to read everything here.

If you still want to downgrade, look under; I still want to downgrade. Click the Directory of other versions and languages link. Look for the directory of the version that you want. But, remember that old versions may have security issues.

You would normally get the about:newtab page with the tiles that shows recently visited websites. If you see another page then you likely have an extension installed that modifies the new tab page.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
