On the NEW TAB > TOP SITES section you have tiles that gives quick access to frequent web pages. I want to remove some of the tiles but can not find any way to accomplish this. How does one go about deleting entries in that section?

TIA for your time and help.

Michael

Open the about:newtabs page. Set the zoom to show whatever number of icons you want.

As you run your mouse over the icons, you will see a lock at one corner, and an X at the other. The X will remove that icon (but it will return the next time you go to that site).

You can move the icons to where you want, and then press the lock to lock it in place.

Thanks for the quick reply Fred. I am having trouble with the steps you suggest. See my comments inline below.

I am not able to open the about:newtabs page. It returns a not found when entered in the address bar.

As you can see in the screenshot there is not a lock or X on the icons. If it were only that simple for me. A more detailed step by step instructions would be greatly appreciated. BTW my FF version is 53.0.2 (32 bit)

They changed things around. about:newtabs is accessed thru the about:newtab page using the 'cog' wheel upper-right.

You can change the order of the boxes on the about:newtab page and drag an item to a different tile to pin it to that position or you can remove a website by clicking the close X to block that URL. You can drag a bookmark or history item from the sidebar and drop it in a tile on the about:newtab page to pin this item and have your own favorites sites present.

Changes made manually on the about:newtab page are stored in prefs that you can find on the about:config page page.

  • browser.newtabpage.pinned stores websites that you have pinned to a tile.
  • browser.newtabpage.blocked stores websites that you have removed by clicking the X button in a tile.
