FF crashes all the time - #6

Quote: Hi keepontrying, cor-el (Site Moderator) posted a new reply in Firefox on 12-04-2017 11:19 PM :

So far, so good. I don't know if cor-el has access to our previous conversation. Quess not, so will have to start again. All drivers are up-to-date. Have been through quite a hell because FF all the time crashes before the file are downloaded. The few times downloading did not go wrong, 7-zip stated crc-errors in any file I have been downloading.

What is going on? ( I hope I will be able to tell about what is happening, before FF is going down once more.

FF crashes on a very irregular bases on a self-built standalone pc. Starting when? Probably at the moment I have changed my videocard, since Premiere Elements crashes as soon as I try to add files to the video editor timeline. Discovered that Geforce cards work better together with Adobe stuff than Radeon cards. Installed Geforce GTX 750 Ti ( known as N750 Ti-2GD5TLP ) and drivers. Didn't work, since FF crashed and there is no cd with the card. Had the standard windows driver for 1920x1200 resolution.

After so many crashes, I am as far as this, after having a chat with Geforce and discussing options. Yesterday I downloaded the 360Mb driver from Geforce for the seventh time. Again with a crc error. Downloaded drivers at the laptop and moved them to the pc. Crc again. Searched the net and found how to extract the files without running the selfextracting exe-file. At last: drivers. Installed them last night. After updating FF once more (to 53.0), there was a crash again. That happens sometimes after almost 20 minutes, sometimes within the first minute.

Here are the latest 5 crasreports (from almost one hundred): Rapport-ID Verzenddatum bp-af60bafd-b70a-457f-9d6a-91d891170420 20-4-17 13:43 bp-0029587a-a4d6-4546-af10-257691170419 20-4-17 00:06 bp-7b4cdac9-1f85-4416-a97f-114821170419 20-4-17 00:06 bp-5719a272-77d5-4d4c-9194-7ce0f0170419 19-4-17 22:25 bp-1bebf73c-91b4-4a89-b21b-754cf1170418 18-4-17 23:08

There is a driver from Kaspersky creating trouble, but these drivers are up-to-date. And there is a driver from nvidia causing troubles. The same driver all the time.

Have used the nic check program from Realtek. No errors. Have checked the router, the switch and what more there is. Windows 7 R1 is up to date.

Would be nice to see if anyone could give me a hand to show how to clear the problems. Thank you for your time and energy in advance. Greetings, Joes

Chosen solution

Try in Windows own Safe mode and Firefox safemode with all plugins disabled (Well I guess nowadays I could just say with FlashPlayer disabled) That is the most stable configuration does Firefox still crash then ?

Also as someone with a high spec self build computer have you considered using the computer as a dual boot one with Linux. That enables you to legally use a 64 bit OS & 64bit Firefox.

Please post a couple of crash IDs from crashes whilst in Windows & Firefox safe mode. We tend not to be experts in the Windows crashes, even if thy occur whilst using Firefox. You would probably need to consult a Windows forum for advice on that. I suppose video driver issues may be the sort of thing that could cause a BSOD

Does your computer only crash in Firefox ? Is it stable doing equivalent browsing or streaming video using Edge or I.E, ?

Out of curiosity How much RAM do you have ? If you have 8GB or more it is probably well worth using 64 bit Firefox, assuming of course you can get Firefox to work without crashing.

I see that you have set a rather low amount of virtual memory and most reports have 50% or more System Memory Use Percentage. Total Virtual Memory 2,147,352,576 bytes (2 GB)

Maybe you should look into that and check for memory issues and possibly close some other applications.

Thank you cor-el for this wakeup-call. FireFox has crashed several times while I was answering your reaction. Have to make things more stable now. Will be back.

Back again (was thrown out a few minutes ago. Have to rush... Changed afew things: - As to the memory: had Memmtest 86+ run for 21 hours; no problems found. - Killed Kaspersky. Hope not too much has left behind. - made anew profile in FireFox. No changes as for as I can see. - multiprocess -> about config: browser.tabs.remote.autostart:

    first line: standard: false
second line: user: true (changed this one into false, a few minutes ago)

- three drivers: nvd3dum, nvwgf2um, nvwgf2um. This is two times, is that correct? Will stop now before I will be cicked (too late, was already cicked out, but came back with all the info still here)

A few more remarks... don't know if they are relevant here.

- My screen refresh rate has been set to 59 per second by the video driver, while my screen is made for 60. Did change that manually, but nothing changed positively.

- While scrolling through a page with many pictures, I notice a 'trembling' line on screen, like there is something wrong drawing the lines on screen. Thought that might have something to do with the refreshrate, but after changing that in 60/sec, the 'trembling' is still there.

- Had in mind to change to win10, but after reading a bunch of comments, decided to stay with win7. Hope to find a solution to change from 32 bit into 64 bit legally, since I have 16Gb of memory in the pc. And the processor is a 6-core.

Hope this helps to get some new ideas for improvement. Thank you.

Thank you John99, for spending your time with my problem.

Will give your suggestions a try. This will take a couple of days, but I'll be back.

Yes, I certainly do consider having a dual boot, but that isn't all that easy when using too small ssd's as a startdisk. 125Gig doesn't seem that much for both win and linux. Read about some rather tricky solutions to get things done that with ssd's.

As mentioned above, "Hope to find a solution to change from 32 bit into 64 bit legally, since I have 16Gb of memory in the pc. And the processor is a 6-core."

Sorry for not showing all the specs here, but I did, before one of your servers obviously crashed or something of the kind.

Have a 60 Gig ssd as my boot-drive with my os and a few large programs for speedy working. Then a 60 Gig second drive for temp-files, swap and a few directories to work on for video and sound. Then a third 2TB hard disk for resulting images and video files plus a bunch of smaller programs that don't need all the speed. Since I don't have a 64 bit os yet, no profit from the 16 Gig memory at this moment.

Found a shop that still sells win7 64 bit oem. I did have a win7 32 bit version on a nas. Problem was that not the disk died, but the nas itself passed away and killed one of the disks. In my struggle for recovering xfs files with windows, I have made a rather silly mistake and used the wrong disk (that was damaged by the nas crash) to recover all files. Lost everything, my win7 install files too. And some irreplaceable video captures too. So, no chances to reinstall win7 now.

Had some trouble with creating video with premiere elements, but a reinstall gave relief.

I do think the main problem is the combination of FF and my nvidia graphics driver. Proving that such a statement is true, is a different thing. Or there is a hardware problem, that doesn't show up. Did some tests, but no evidence for hardware related problems. The pc has been built last autumn with new mobo, processor, graphics card and memory. Changed the graphics card later, but one problem is I am living far away from glassfibre networks and nvidia puts all driver versions (win7, 8 and 10, 32 and 64 bit) into one huge file of nearly 400 Mb. That is far too much for my weak adsl to get in without crc's. Took a few weeks to get it down correctly. Now I am still having these troubles, even with the new drivers. Will send the requested info, Give me a few days. The pc doesn't crash often, just a few bsod's last months. The pc doesn't crash, just FF hangs. Starting, just reading a page of text, scrolling a site with pictures, name it, and FF hangs. Immediately, after 5 seconds or after ten minutes. No egular interval. Must be over one hundred times by now.

Do not use IE or any other browser. Edge only works on win10, which I do not have.

Thank you once again. Feels so good that someone is trying to give a hand.

Discussing Linux is not really on topic for this forum, but then we are doing so as a troubleshooting option. Linux can be booted from just about anything that is bootable. A couple of years ago I was still booting linux from a floppy on a machine that would not boot from USBs. Once booted it will run or use partitions near enough anywhere. Installing on and booting from memory sticks can be convenient, but not good for the life of the memory sticks if used on a regular basis. Unfortunately Linux is not always that good for graphics support so no guarantees it would help if you have graphics issues. You can boot and run 64bit Linux Debian with a graphical desktop on a 8GB USB memory stick assuming the machine will boot from USB. And there are various alternative methods of installing or running linux. See https://wiki.debian.org/QuickInstall or https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStickQuick

I am not too sure how much we can help you here. Your issues may be more general ones rather than just Firefox.

The problems with the support forum was due to an intentional but rather hasty and not totally planned rollback to previous forum software. Your other recent profile and posts can be seen in read only form here:

If you do not have IE maybe consider installing Google Chrome as an alternative browser.

Followed your advice; started win7 and FF both in safe mode. You forgot to mention all the bookmarks are out of reach then too :-)) Had not one single crash for several hours. Stopped FF, forgot the whole safe modus and ran FF again, not in safe mode. Still no problems. While in an earlier stage, I did have crashes in win7 safe mode, this time I hadn't. So, at least something has changed in a positive way. Looks like win7 and something are having a problem together. Glad FF isn't the one to blame, as far as it looks now. Thank you once more, the idea of a Linix OS is not gone yet. But will have to get windows up and running steady first. Found BlueScreenView.exe to study bsod's. Maybe that will give me some more help in the right direction. Was great to get all the help from Mozilla Support. Please enjoy life. And keep on helping litle desperates like me. Will mark this problem as solved, since I don't think we will get on here now. Greetings, Joes
