After using the browser for some time I often want to start again without the next user seeing the previous screens.

I close down and re-boot, but when I open the browser anew either the same screens come up o there is a list of the screens that I was at.

You can either choose a different startup (home) page or clear the browsing history when you close Firefox.

See also this article about the New Tab page (about:newtab):

You can create a new Boolean pref browser.pagethumbnails.capturing_disabled on the about:config page and set the value to true if you want to disable the thumbnails altogether.

Thanks for the answer, but I do not want to clear history, just the active screen when I open it next so that others cannot accidentally discover where I, or others have been browsing. I often need to go back into history to recapture a link from a day or so in the past. Some things are personal and need not be public knowledge blasted all over th new opening page...

You can set the new tab page to a blank page as you can see in the above mentioned New page KB article.

You can hide the content of the about:newtab page with code in the userContent.css file.

The customization files userChrome.css (interface) and userContent.css (websites) are located in the chrome folder in the user profile folder.

@-moz-document url(about:newtab){ #newtab-window { display: none !important; } }

Thanks for the effort, but while I have no doubt you understand what you are talking about as do probably many others who are more knowledgeable about these things than I am, about half of your response may as well have been in Chinese. But thanks for the response. I'll try to figure out what these thing are.
