My homepages settings don't work correctly

For some reason 4.0.1 won't allow me to change my current homepage. I have about 8 tabs set to open at the same time but would like to change this but ff won't let me. I admit I played with the about:config file so something is probably wrong there, not in the home page settings. I'm just not sure how to fix it. Thanks for your help.
