I switched on my PC and there was an update for realplayer. Since then firefox will not load. It is running according to Task Manager. I've downloaded a another copy of the programme using IE but whilst it loaded as a programme, does not open a window.

I no longer use RealPlayer, and can not advise about that, but you should be able to get Firefox working again. See firefox hangs find the firefox process and close it with Task Manger. If the problem re-occurs read the rest of the article and the other linked articles.

I've tried everything in the Firefox asrsenal but as I can't even open it that doesn't leave much. I guess back to IE which is a great disappointment

Running firefox in safemode safe mode, but after you have already checked that you do not have a firefox.exe process running: by closing, checking in Task Manger, killing any process, and rechecking that none is shown may work.

If even that fails the next step is to create an aditional new profile and try to start that. When doing so it is wise to use a new empty folder for the profile location.

Is firefox starting in safe node ?
and do you see the check list of options to change ?

  • do NOT change anything initially, just click on the button to continue.

When you try to start firefox in a new profile do you see the profiles list options ?

Doing a fresh install is a possibility, if you use the option to clear data however you will loose all bookmarks and profile information such as stored passwords, so that option is usually avoided, but if it is taken at least rename the profile folder and copy it to a new safe location; maybe on your windows desktop, you may be able to use its information again that way. If you use IE you will of course be starting with no passwords or bookmarks/favourites.

I have no way to open it in safe made. All I can do is right click the icon to open properties and I see no reference to safe mode there.

As mentioned in my original post I have deleted the programme and downloaded several times to no avail. I have not deleted stored personal data because then I may as well stick with IE9 which I have been forced to use the last two days.

Should I try and find a copy of version 3.8 as quite a few are have problems with this new version?

Hi again,

Helps if I give the correct link !
The press shift button appears to still work, but the option to start in safe mode from the programs listing of a standard install I do not think exists anymore.

Safe mode will start from a command line, (or a shortcut) and in some circumstances you may need to enter the full path name on a command or shortcut detailed instructions are at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode

Remember (at least at this stage) do not make changes when you get the options list, just click on the continue button.

If you think that RealPlayer is causing the problem you could uninstall that for now.

Firefox recent versions are 3.6 4.0 (and 5.0 in beta). There is some debate as to whether creating new profiles or re-installing Firefox is the simplest method of troubleshooting and solving some of these problems, personally I use multiple profiles and multiple versions of Firefox, and tend to forget the required procedures are less than straightforward. For now at least try safe mode again.

Great, safe mode saved the day. I dissabled all add ons and now loads. I'll selectively rebuild the add on list. Worth having a fixed answer to "hangs at startup" perhaps and how to get safe mode in that circumstance?

Glad you fixed it.

"Worth having a fixed answer to "hangs at startup" perhaps and how to get safe mode in that circumstance? "

I may if I remember suggest something along those lines, after the documentation settles down from the recent revisions. That sort of problem is harder to see an answer for now because with safe mode being available from within the UI the safe mode option available from the standard installs Windows programs listing may have disappeared. The profile manager as it exists now is also being phased out.

To be fair the current KB article on safe mode does emphasise the shift key in Windows & Firefox4, the run path in Windows & Firefox 3.5 and the alternatives in Linux.
there are + signs in the article, click them to see alternatives for other OS or Firefox versions, the default display should match your firefox & os when viewed in windows.

BUT of course in these circumstances users unable to use Firefox see the default version for the latest version, that may not be what they need. Maybe the article should also emphasise the posibility of manually selecting the version of article.
