Lightning now has a popup when you click on an appointment to edit it. This is a REALLY REALLY POOR IDEA! One more thing I have to click on. One more thing making my RSI worse. I cannot imagine why this new massive irritation has been implemented. Please would someone tell me how to make it stop doing that. Thanks in advance.

I think that is bug 1685007

After some 2 years of discussion a patch was put up two days ago.

Hi Matt. Thanks. Great news. Sorry to ask for more help but I went to the bug page and could not find the patch. I clicked on the link: attached file Bug 1685007 - Add pref `calendar.events.defaultActionEdit` for editing events on double-click. r=aleca — Details but could not find anything on that page. Please could you tell me how to implement the patch. (I might not be the only one looking!)
