I've been using Outlook 2010 for a long time. One feature it has that has been extremely useful is being able to open and close individual pst files. This allows me, for example, to have an archive on NAS of old emails. I only open the archive if I'm looking for something specific (File --> Open --> Open Outlook Data File), and then close the archive. The archive is large, and opening it every time Outlook starts is a waste of time.

I don't initially see how, in Thunderbird 91.8.1, to do something similar.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thunderbird doesn't use a single data file like Outlook. You can save multiple messages as individual eml files using Thunderbird's Save As > File option, or Ctrl+S keyboard shortcut. You can then open those messages via the Open menu option.
