Spell check in thunderbird is ticked but is not operating in my emails. How do I fix this?

I have spelling errors in email but the spelling is not checked. Even when I highlight the word and click spellcheck the box opens but the misspelt word is not shown. If fact it is a blank form.

click the down arrow beside the "Spelling" on the toolbar. Is there a dictionary shown?
