Closing a new tab closes firefox

more options

I recently "refreshed" Firefox to solve a printer problem and that worked. But, now I'm having a problem with tabs. Prior to the "refresh" I kept 8-9 tabs always open and they ran across the top of the page with a "new tab" at the right end of the string. I could open a new tab, keep it open, and close it. Now, the new tab is at the upper left and when I search for a new site and open a tab that tab stays at the upper left. When I close that new tab, Firefox closes and I have to start all over again. My standard pages load but I must sign in to every page.

What do I need to do to get the "new tab" to the right of my standard string of tabs and be able to close that new tab without Firefox closing down and forcing me start all over.

I'm running Win 10 on an HP laptop.

Thanks

Does this problem occur when you open a new tab by pressing Ctrl+T -- or does that still correctly add a new tab to the tab bar of the existing window?

Like a Google, Bing, or DuckDuckGo search? Search sites often have a preference to choose between opening a result in the same tab or in a new window/new tab. Firefox also has a setting to divert new windows to new tabs instead. So the combination of these settings can help determine what happens when you click a result. What site do you use?

Regarding Firefox requiring a sign-in, this could occur if the cookie the site set the last time you logged in has been cleared. By default, Firefox keeps cookies, but it's easy to modify Firefox's privacy settings in a way that flushes them. Do you recall making any changes to your settings affecting cookies?
