I want to use my gmail account with Tbird but I don't want Tbird to download everything I have on the web.
I installed Tbird and it proceeded to download ALL my web gmail! No, I just want to use Tbird going forward. How do I do this. I am switching to Tbird because Outlook will not receive any longer...something is messed up and I can't seem to fix that.

so to clarify you want to 'view and send emails' FROM Tbird but not have any emails stored on the hard drive or just some interval?
I don't want Tbird to download the old gmail messages, just start fresh with any new ones. I also don't see a way to set up rules so the emails get sorted into categories.
So for the first part. This is likely fixed one of two ways:
1) Let it download and move to the local mailbox and then delete all there and have the new emails go to inbox.
2) Set Gmail to forward and delete on their servers/delete if read on remote (in Thunderbird)
To the second issue with folders:
So new emails stay on my hard drive AND on the Gmail web. All this is because Outlook stopped working.
You can set that email to delete or not forward to Thunderbird the full email (only headers)
