I have just had to reinstall OSX and want to restore my bookmarks etc.

I still have all of the data from before however I cannot find the ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox folder anywhere.

I've enabled hidden folders but still no luck.

Incidentally I cannot find these files for Chrome either!

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Zak

If you have reinstalled your operating system, all previous files on the system should have been deleted. As a result, your application data has been erased and cannot be restored.

In the future, we recommend that you make periodic backups of your bookmarks to an external hard drive. For more information on doing this, please refer to this Mozilla support article:

I reinstalled on a separate partition as a fresh install, therefore I have all of the files and folders from the old install.

You can copy your entire Firefox profile if you desire. The Firefox profile is usually located at the following directory: Drive:\Users\name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

To copy the old profile to the new profile, simply open the default profile on the old drive and copy the contents. Then delete the contents of the profile on the new drive and paste the old profile's contents in it.

Note: Firefox will not load your profile if you simply paste the folder into the application data, as Firefox needs the folder name to remain the same.

If you wish to only copy the bookmarks, you can try booting your computer from that partition (assuming your operating system is still installed) and export the bookmarks, via the instructions in my previous link.

I'm using OSX not Windows.

Oops! Forgot about that. Sorry.

I'm not familiar with the Mac operating system. I will see if I can get one of my Mac literate colleagues to help you out with this one.

You write: I cannot find the ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox folder anywhere

Are you talking about the current Firefox profile folder or the profile folder in the backup?

  • ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/
  • ~/Library/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/

Did you verify that this folder was included when you made the backup?

I'm looking in the old profile folder, not the current one.

I can't find either of those files.

I didn't make a backup as such, my OS failed and I created a partition and installed a new OS on the new, empty partition. In theory all of the old files from before should have remained intact.

This is assuming that the hard drive is still in a format that Mac can read. In some cases, crashes can ruin the formatting of a drive, making them impossible for your operating system to read them.

Are you able to access anything on the old partition?

Yes, I have managed to copy all files and folders, the old partition works perfectly.
