I can send emails if I go on to the orange website but I want to continue with Thunderbird. I have phoned BT helpdesk but they were not interested with another suppliers email address. I have had my email address for 20 years so I don't want to change it. Help or guidance would be appreciated.

What are you talking about?

If your new email provider is BT, then you'd need to set-up a new BT account in Thunderbird.

If BT is your new ISP, and Orange is still your email provider, what exactly is your problem with sending messages?

Do you get any error message?

Yes I do get a message error " An error occurred sending mail SMTP server freeserve is unknown. The server may be incorrrecty configered. Please verify that your SMTP service setting are correct and try again" I assume I need to change the SMPT to BT which I have done but perhaps not correctly.
